The Chinese Grand Prix returns to Formula 1 for the first time since 2019. Due to the outbreak of the corona pandemic in 2020 and its aftermath, China had to do without a GP until this year. Read all about the circuit and the program with the first sprint race of the season here.

For the first time since 2019, a Grand Prix will be held in Shanghai. That year, Lewis Hamilton defeated his then teammate Valterri Bottas in the battle for victory. Max Verstappen finished fourth. Pierre Gasly, who also drove for Red Bull at the time, finished sixth.

From 2020 to 2023, the Chinese GP was replaced by the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Italy. Hamilton won this GP in 2020, after which Verstappen took first place twice in 2021 and 2022. Last year the race was canceled. Due to severe weather in the region, the circuit was flooded.

The Shanghai International circuit

The Chinese GP is held on the Shanghai International circuit. What is special about this circuit is that the shape seen from the air is based on the Chinese character 上 (Shang). The circuit consists of sixteen corners and two long straights.

The circuit has a length of 5.451 kilometers. The GP consists of 56 laps, giving the race a total length of 305,066 kilometers. The record for the fastest lap dates from 2004, when Michael Schumacher set a time of 1:32.238.
